Outdoormaster Dolphin II Electric SUP Pump Review

Dolphin II electric pump

Is anyone still hand pumping their inflatable SUP?  With so many great electric pump options out there now there is just no reason to be putting in that effort unless you really enjoy the workout.

Personally I like to save my energy for the water so I just about always use an electric pump nowadays.

Outdoormaster is the largest manufacturer of quality electric pumps designed specifically for inflatable paddle boards.  I use one of their pumps almost every single time I take my board out so I am quite familiar with them.

The Dolphin II is their smallest electric pump and the most affordable.  It’s priced extremely well for what you get.

PROS & CONS

This pump has some definite pros and some definite cons.  Being aware of them will help you to decide whether this is the right electric pump for your needs.

IS THIS PUMP RIGHT FOR YOU?

Dolphin II electric sup pump

In order to answer that question you have to know what your other options are.

The Dolphin is a more basic version of the super popular Outdoormaster Shark electric pump (I’ve been using the Shark pump for years) and the Whale pump with built-in rechargeable battery (awesome for more flexibility for charging options).

The Dolphin is the smallest of the three, more compact and lightweight.

For this reason it is ideal for travel and for those who want to keep the weight down in their carry bag when transporting their paddle board.

You can see the size comparison with the other Outdoormaster pumps in the photo below.

Outdoormaster electric SUP Pumps

The Dolphin is also lowest in price, making it more affordable, followed next by the Shark and then the Whale cost a bit more due to the fact that it has a built in rechargeable battery.

SPECS

The pump measures only 10.2″ x 6.7″ x 6.6″. At that size it will easily store in your SUP carry bag or gear bag.

It weighs only 2.93 lbs. so it is extremely lightweight and portable.

REDUCED NOISE LEVEL

What is the downside to using an electric pump for your iSUP?  You guessed it, the noise!  Especially once the pump gets to the second stage of inflation the noise tends to get worse.

I’ve yet to find a ‘quiet’ electric pump for my boards.  They tend to be quite powerful and consequently they do make some noise.

If you’re camping at a serene lake and decide to get up early one morning to go for an a morning paddle the last thing you want to do is to disturb the peace and wake everyone else up with the noise of your electric pump.

The Dolphin II is the quietest electric SUP pump on the market. Don’t get me wrong, it still makes noise but it is quieter than any other I have tried.

It operates at 70 decibels whereas most electric pumps for SUP’s range between 80-100 decibels.

NO OVERHEATING

Dolphin II electric pump for paddle boards

In the past electric pumps for paddle boards have been known to overheat easily, especially when inflating two or three paddle boards in a row.  It used to drive me crazy.

When they overheat the motor can burn out and the pump can die.  This is not an issue you have to worry about with the Outdoormaster pumps.

The Outdoormaster pumps have a unique cooling system that cools the pump as it is working hard so that it doesn’t overheat.

Outdoormaster claims the Dolphin II can inflate up to 10 SUP’s in a row without overheating!

I didn’t test it out with 10 boards but I did test inflating three boards in a row and it inflated each one equally as fast and never overheated.

12V DC CAR CONNECTOR

This pump connects to the 12V DC connection in your vehicle and has a 12A fuse for added safety.  With the vehicle running the pump gets plenty of juice to run smoothly.

The Dolphin does not come with a built-in battery pack so it must be plugged into a 12V DC connection to work.

If you need a pump that can be used anywhere and not just around a vehicle then the Outdoormaster Whale pump is the way to go.  The Whale has a built-in rechargeable battery that allows you to inflate your paddle board absolutely anywhere.

COMPLETE NOZEL SET

Wondering if the Dolphin pump will work with your board?  The majority of paddle boards have an H3 valve so chances are very good that yes it will work with your paddle board.

The dolphin comes with a complete set of 5 different valve attachments so it can be used with inflatable kayaks and other inflatable items as well as inflatable stand up paddle boards.

Included in the package are:

  • 1 x Boton Valve
  • 1 x C7 Valve
  • 1 x H3/HR Valve
  • 1 x 805 Valve
  • 2 x Gaskets
  • 1 x 4.5′ hose
  • 1 x Manual

Pro Tip: If the pump doesn’t seem to fit the valve on your board properly when using the H3 valve it is most likely because you will need to switch the gasket to a different one.

The package comes with 2 gaskets (the little white rubber rings).  Switch to a different size gasket if needed so that the valve attachment secures snuggly to the valve on your SUP.

DIGITAL DISPLAY

Dolphin II pump digital display

On the face of the pump is an easy to monitor digital display.  The LED screen shows you exactly what PSI level you are at so you can monitor the progress in real time while it is inflating your board.

AUTO SHUT OFF

Most importantly it has an auto shutoff function.  Once you set your PSI level it will automatically shut off once it reaches that level.  You can walk away and not worry about your board being overinflated.

I have never had this function fail even once after years of using the Outdoormaster pumps.  It works great.

PRESSURE RANGE UP TO 20PSI

The Dolphin II can support a pressure range of 0.5 – 20 PSI (0.034-1.378 Bar).  I normally inflate my boards to 15 PSI, sometimes even less in the heat (as air expands in the heat).  So this pump is more than up for the job.

CARRY HANDLE & SHOCK RESISTANT FEET

Dolphin electric pump for sup handle

Although the Dolphin does not come with a carry bag it has a built-in carry handle so it’s really easy to carry around.  I tend to keep mine in the box so I don’t lose any parts.

The shock resistant feet keep it steady and secure while it is working.

ECO-FRIENDLY & TEST-APPROVED

According to Outdoormaster the Dolphin has gone through rigorous testing and has CE certification.  What is CE certification you might wonder?  I looked it up myself and found this explanation in Wikipedia:

On commercial products, the letters CE mean that the manufacturer or importer affirms the goods’ conformity with European health, safety, and environmental protection standards.

You can take that for what it is, basically the pump has passed safety tests for production.

SPEED

To inflate a paddle board that is 11′ long, 32″ wide and 6″ thick it took 11 minutes and 29 seconds with the Dolphin.

In comparison to the Outdoormaster Shark electric pump, which takes 7 minutes and 33 seconds to inflate and the Outdoormaster Whale electric pump takes 7 minutes and 26 seconds to inflate the same board

The Dolphin II is definitely the slowest of the bunch.

NO DEFLATE OPTION

This pump is a little more basic in design and you’ll notice there is no deflate option, so it can only inflate your paddle board.

This might not see like a big deal but I personally really like using the deflate option on my Shark and Whale pumps.

I find that it’s the easiest way to get all of the air out of my boards so that I can roll them up properly before storing them away in their backpacks.

TO SUM IT UP

Bottom line the Dolphin II is a great electric pump for the size and especially for the lower price tag.  It’s not quite as powerful as it’s big brothers the Shark and the Whale but it has a purpose and works well.

For my own personal use I’ll likely stick with my Shark electric pump or my Whale pump when away from my vehicle.

I really like the power that these two pumps offer, the speed in which they inflate my boards and the fact that I can also use them to deflate my SUP is a big plus.  Your an check out and compare all of these pumps at Outdoormaster.com.

However if you need an ultra portable and lightweight electric SUP pump the Dolphin definitely gets 5 stars in that department!

OR if you want a good electric pump without dishing out the big bucks, the Dolphin is the best one out there within it’s price range.
