Glide Retro Elite SUP Kayak: Complete Review

paddling the Glide Retro Elite hybrid SUP kayak

The inflatable paddle board market has exploded in recent years, with brands competing to offer lighter, more durable, and more versatile boards.

Among these, the Glide Retro Elite 10’6″ SUP Kayak Hybrid stands out as a premium all-around board that promises stability, durability, and multi-purpose functionality.

But how does it hold up in real-world use and is it worth the price compared to the competition?

In this detailed review, we examine everything from build quality and performance to usability, accessories, and long-term value.

What Sets The Glide Retro Elite Apart From The Rest?

At its core the Glide Retro Elite is a 10’6″ all-around inflatable stand up paddle board. However, it also sits in a broader category of hybrid paddleboards designed to function both as a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and a seated kayak.

The added kayak functionality provides the versatility of paddling the Retro Elite either standing or sitting. Thus you get a very portable SUP that can do almost everything.

The Retro Elite also distinguishes itself with premium materials, thoughtful design, and a reputation for stability.

Specifications

The Glide Retro Elite follows the classic “all-around” SUP shape and dimensions:

  • Length: 10’6”
  • Width: 33.5”
  • Thickness: 6”
  • Weight: 20 lbs (board only)
  • Max capacity: Up to 400 lbs
  • Construction: Cross-woven drop-stitch core with multi-layer PVC
  • Recommended PSI: 15–20 (max rated up to 25 PSI)

These specs place it squarely in the sweet spot for versatility. A 10’6” length offers maneuverability, while the wider 33.5” platform provides excellent stability—especially for beginners.

Rather than focusing on speed this board offers easy handling and a very stable and comfortable ride.

Each board comes with the full accessory package adding a lot of value to the purchase. The package includes a 10’6″x33.5″ SUP as well as:

Build Quality and Construction

Glide Retro Elite paddle board

Cross-Woven Drop-Stitch Core

One of the standout features of the Retro Elite is its 1300D fusion material and cross-woven drop-stitch core, branded as “AeroMatrix Elite.” This is a significant upgrade over standard knitted drop-stitch cores found in cheaper boards.

The result is a highly durable paddle board that delivers excellent stiffness underfoot – even without max inflation – while maintaining a lightweight, user-friendly design.

What Is Cross-Woven Drop Stitch?

Cross-woven drop-stitch is truly the new generation of material used for inflatable paddle boards.

In simple terms:

  • Traditional knitted drop-stitch = flexible but less rigid
  • Cross-woven drop-stitch = tighter, stronger, more rigid – think less stretchy
WOVEN DROP STITCHKNITTED/CROSS KNITTED DROP STITCH
✅ Minimal stretch in both directionsMore stretch, less rigid
✅ More durable & puncture resistantMore susceptible to tears and damage
✅ Reaches peak stiffness without max pressureLess margin for heat & pressure changes
✅ Creates a lighter product with less flexHeavier product with more flex
✅ Less PVC coating for airtight sealMore PVC coating needed

Why Does A More Rigid Board Matter?

It matters because the stiffer the board, the less it flexes in choppy water—and the easier and more efficient it is to paddle.

Why don’t more iSUP companies use woven drop stitch construction? For the simple reason that it costs more to use. However those that do create a far superior product.

Multi-Layer PVC and Welded Rails

The Retro Elite uses a multi-layer PVC construction with welded seams, enhancing durability and air retention. Glide’s “ThermoFuse” rail system adds reinforcement along the board edges, which are typically the weakest points in inflatable SUPs.

👉 This translates into:

  • Better long-term durability
  • Resistance to leaks and seam failures
  • Increased rigidity at higher PSI

Weight vs Durability Balance

At about 20 lbs, the Retro Elite is impressively light for its build quality. Many boards in this durability class weigh significantly more.

This balance between lightweight portability and structural strength is one of the board’s biggest advantages.

Most people will have no problem carrying the Retro Elite solo and it packs down into a nice wheeled backpack for travel and storage.

👉 Translation: This board is Ideal if you need something portable, strong and easy to handle solo.

Stability and All-Around Design

Width and Shape

At 33.5 inches wide, the Retro Elite is wider than many standard all-around boards. This gives it exceptional primary stability, making it ideal for:

  • Beginners learning balance
  • Yoga and fitness activities
  • Paddling with pets or kids

The board also features a wide, rounded nose, which increases volume and prevents tipping – especially in calm water.

With the wider width it can hold up to 400 lb in weight so it is excellent for loading up with gear, a dog or the kids.

Storage Bungees

The bungee section on the nose of the board is attached to four stainless steel D-rings and is perfect for storing a small to medium size dry bag, a water bottle or other gear you’d like to keep secure while on the water.

At the tail end of the board is a slightly larger bungee section also attached to four stainless steel D-rings that can keep more gear secure and out of the way of your feet.

Practical Stability

On flat water, the Retro Elite feels extremely stable – even when shifting weight or turning. We found the stability to remain consistent across most of the board, thanks to its evenly distributed width.

The tail tapers slightly but still has a good amount of width for ultimate control and balance.

However, there’s a trade-off:

  • Even with the superior build quality, a wider board is always going to move slower in the water. That said, most beginner paddlers won’t notice the difference in speed and will instead appreciate the board’s stability and ease of use.

👉 Translation: This is one of its standout traits: very beginner-friendly even when loaded up with lots of weight.

Performance On The Water

Speed and Glide

The Retro Elite is not a speed-focused board, but it performs well for its category.

  • Speed rating: Moderate
  • Best use: Casual cruising, recreational paddling

The speed and glide won’t compare to a longer touring board, but it offers:

  • Easier maneuverability
  • Better control for beginners

If a faster board is on your wish list you’ll want to consider other options like a touring focused paddle board. Glide has a fantastic touring option called the Glide Quest Elite that is worth checking out.

Tracking & Fin System

The board uses a removable 2+1 fin setup, which is often called a Thruster setup. A Thruster setup consists of one large centre fin and two smaller side fins.

This type of fin system is very common with stand up paddle boards because it offers a great balance of straight line tracking and easy turning.

We found the Retro Elite to have surprisingly excellent tracking for the shape and size of the board.

However:

  • It won’t track as straight as longer touring boards
  • Wind can affect direction due to its width

👉 Pro Tip: In most conditions the board will handle and feel best with all three fins attached.

2 Easy Click-In Side Fins

The two removable side fins easily click into the fin boxes in seconds and really help with stability, control and tracking.

9″ Dolphin Style Screw-In Fin

The size and style of the larger fin is perfect for flat water paddling and will help provide a smooth and stable ride.

The 9″ fin easily secures with a metal screw and plate into the standard US fin box. A US fin box is an industry standard and allows for the fin to be easily changed out. If you lose or break your fin a replacement will be very easy to find.

One unique feature that Glide has implemented with their fin system is a folding fin box. We haven’t seen this on many other inflatable paddle boards.

Often when rolling up a deflated paddle board the fin box can get in the way of folding the tail end nicely.

Glide has found a way around that by creating a gap in the middle of the fin box that allows for an easy fold when deflated. We thought this was ingenious and it definitely helps to create a nice compact package when the board is deflated and packed into the included wheeled SUP bag.

👉 Pro Tip: If paddling in very shallow water remove the larger centre fin to prevent dragging or hitting obstacles.

Maneuverability

This inflatable SUP is relatively nimble for its size. A wider board typically takes more effort to turn and control.

Although it’s something worth noting, the shorter 10’6″ length and lighter weight work to its advantage, helping the board remain relatively easy to maneuver, particularly in calm water conditions.

  • Beginners will have no problem controlling this SUP and
  • It is responsive enough for casual play and small waves

That said, it’s not designed for advanced surf or aggressive maneuvering. Easy cruising is where it shines.

Kayak Hybrid Functionality

inflatable sup hybrid kayak Glide

One of the defining features of this board is its SUP-to-kayak conversion capability.

In the past we haven’t always loved inflatable SUP’s that come with a kayak conversion kit.

However this one offers a great setup. With the inflatable seat attached, it is extremely comfortable to paddle kayak-style. The seat inflates in seconds and secures to the side D-rings on the board.

The seat straps can be adjusted to hold the back straighter and we found it to provide good back support.

With the seat you sit up quite high off the deck pad, which can take a little getting used to balance wise at first.

However we found that very quickly we got in the groove and truly enjoyed the kayak experience.

We also loved the neoprene pocket at the back of the seat to hold small accessories. I was able to fit a small 2L dry bag in the pocket that I use to store my cell phone and car keys.

Underneath the back pocket you’ll find a canvas daisy chain link that can be used for securing other gear.

Glide Retro Elite kayak package

Using this board as a kayak is most useful for:

  • Long paddling sessions
  • Windy conditions
  • Beginners who want extra stability

Sometimes a hybrid dual-purpose board won’t excel at either functionality. However in this case Glide nailed it with a board that’s genuinely fun to paddle and feels pretty awesome in kayak mode.

Be aware that it is not a true kayak substitute. The width and rounded nose of the board does slow progress in the water. Yet it is so comfortable and relaxing to paddle seated that we found that really didn’t matter to us.

Expect comfort and as opposed to sleek performance and you won’t be disappointed.

👉 Translation: It’s built as a true all-around “do everything” board. Essentially, you get the option of two paddling experiences in one.

Comfort and Deck Design

Full-Length Deck Pad

The Retro Elite features a full-length EVA foam smooth deck pad, which is a major advantage. The length of the deck pad is a feature that can sometimes be skimped on.

A full length deck pad with a smooth feel like the one this board offers has some great benefits.

Benefits include:

  • The soft but firm cushioning is easier on feet when standing and more comfortable on knees when kneeling
  • Plenty of usable space makes it family friendly and ideal for yoga, stretching or other fitness activities
  • Decent traction helps to prevent slipping when wet and is safe for pets and kids (good grip)

Essentially you can paddle longer with less fatigue in your feet and legs, while feeling more stable and confident whether paddling, sitting, doing fitness activities or sharing with loved ones.

👉 Translation: More functional deck space = greater versatility and a safer, more usable surface.

19 Stainless Steel D-rings

Along both sides of the board you will find 14 stainless steel D-rings. 4 are being used by the back bungees and the rest can be used for seat placement, clipping on a shoulder strap or even tying down a cooler.

Besides these 14 D-rings there are also four more being used by the front bungees and one more by the handle at the tail of the board for securing the SUP leash.

With so many attachment points there are plenty of options for securing other accessories and gear.

Portability and Ease of Use

Carrying the Glide Retro Elite inflatable stand up paddle board hybrid kayak

Lightweight Design

As mentioned above with the cross-woven drop stitch design this paddleboard is lightweight and very portable.

At just over 20 lbs, the Retro Elite is:

  • Easy to carry
  • Manageable for solo users
  • Travel-friendly

I had no trouble carrying it to and from the water even when fully loaded with the accessories.

It’s definitely lighter than many boards of similar size making it ideal for:

  • Road trips
  • Hiking to remote lakes (if you’re up for the challenge)
  • Convenience – A board that is easier to transport and is likely to be used more often.

No heavy lifting means less effort off the water and more energy for enjoying your time on it.

Setup and Packability

Glide Retro Elite leash with SUP

Setup time is about 10 minutes. Inflate the board, attach the fins and secure the 3-piece paddle. If paddling in SUP mode you are now good to go.

If using in kayak mode then it will take an extra minute to inflate the seat and secure the kayak blade to the SUP paddle.

The whole process is very fast and easy to do.

When deflated everything fits into the included wheeled SUP bag making it easy to transport the whole package to and from your destination.

With the folding fin system the board can be neatly packed in the backpack so that there is less bulk.

Durability and Longevity

Durability is definitely up there as one of the Retro Elite’s strongest selling points.

Key Factors

  • Cross-woven drop-stitch core = less flex
  • Multi-layer PVC = puncture resistance
  • Welded heat-fused triple-layer rails = a stiffer board and long term reliability

The board is designed to last for years with regular use, even in varied conditions like lakes, calm rivers, and coastal water.

One of the things we noticed right away was almost no flex when paddling in choppy water and when loaded with extra weight. A stiffer board glides smoother and feels fantastic to paddle.

With the higher weight capacity it’s important that the board can actually tolerate the heavier weight without flexing. The fact that it does is a real testament to the solid construction.

That extra durability is a big plus for larger paddlers or anyone hauling gear, all without giving up the convenience of a portable board.

Warranty

Glide offers a 5-year warranty on all of their inflatable paddle boards. There are not many inflatable SUP companies that offer a warranty that long and this really reinforces the confidence they have in the products they build.

TIP: All inflatable paddle boards require proper care to help them last for years.

  1. Always rinse with fresh water after use, especially if paddling in saltwater.
  2. Always completely dry the board before storing to prevent mold and mildew.
  3. When not in use store away from exposure to UV rays and high temperatures.

👉 Translation: The Glide Retro Elite is built to last and handles most conditions and extra weight well – plus it is protected with an excellent warranty.

Notable Limitations

All paddle boards have strengths and weaknesses as you’ll never find one SUP that excels at everything. Even though the Glide Retro Elite is a well built and versatile board there are a few trade-offs to be aware of.

1. Not Optimized For Speed

  • The board is wide (33.5”) and stability-focused, which naturally slows it down
  • Better suited for cruising than distance paddling or touring
  • It’s built for balance and ease of use rather than speed-focused performance.

👉 Bottom line: You get a stable, comfortable ride, but it’s not built for maximum speed or glide.

2. Turning Can Take More Effort

  • It’s less agile compared to narrower boards and takes more effort to turn.
  • You may find that it takes more strokes to turn depending on your size and strength

👉 Bottom line: With the shorter length we found it turned easier than other SUP’s we’ve used of similar width. In calm weather conditions it’s not a big issue, it’s just something to be aware of with a wider board.

3. Built For Calm Water Not Rough Conditions

  • The Retro Elite has a relatively flat rocker profile and handles better on calm water as opposed to heavy chop or big waves.

👉 Bottom line: Although we feel it is strong enough to handle most conditions it will perform and handle best on calmer water.

There are over 400 real user reviews of this paddle board on the Glide website if you’d like to check out what others have to say about their experience with the Glide Retro Elite SUP.
