Design and Build Quality

Attractive and Modern Appearance
The Weekender Plus strikes an excellent balance between style and simplicity. Its clean lines and modern design are eye-catching without feeling overly flashy, giving it a look that’s likely to appeal to a wide range of paddlers.
This hybrid SUP looks more premium than one would expect for a board that costs well under $500.
There are three color options to choose from each with their own unique style.

Color Options:
- River Ripple – Combines calming shades of blue and grey with a few orange accents creating a classic, water-inspired aesthetic This is the one that we have and that you’ll see in our photos.
- Bonsai Camo – Blends earthy shades of brown and beige with a few red accents creating a rugged, nature-inspired look.
- Grateful Dead – Fun and unique limited edition design that celebrates the band’s legacy and 60th anniversary. This design is a little more bold than the other two but still maintains the classic feel of the Weekender design. – If you’re a true Deadhead you simply must check out all five of the Retrospec Grateful Dead paddleboard collaborations!
Construction Quality

Retrospec builds the Weekender Plus using what they have branded AerGlide-Fusion construction. This is essentially a manufacturing process designed to maximize stiffness and durability while keeping the board lightweight.
The technology combines three key components that work together to improve the board’s overall performance.
Drop-Stitch Core
At the heart of the board is a high-density drop-stitch core, where thousands of polyester threads connect the deck and hull.
This internal structure allows the board to inflate to high pressure while maintaining its shape, resulting in a rigid platform that feels stable on the water.
Heat Fused Double Layer PVC
Surrounding the core are two layers of rugged 1000-denier PVC that are heat fused together rather than glued.
This fusion process creates a stronger bond while eliminating excess adhesive, producing a board that is both lightweight and highly durable.
Reinforced Side Rails

To further strengthen the construction, Retrospec wraps the side rails in an additional layer of 1000-denier PVC.
This reinforcement increases the board’s overall rigidity while adding extra protection against impacts, abrasions, and years of regular use.
👉Translation: While this type of construction is not uncommon in the inflatable SUP world, it is however impressive for a paddle board in this price range. The combination of a heat-fused double-layer shell, reinforced rails, and a high-density drop-stitch core gives the Weekender Plus a solid and stable feel on the water without adding unwanted weight.
Setup Experience

Inflation Process
Inflating the board was straightforward. The first time took approximately 9 minutes to inflate using the included double action hand pump. Depending on how fast you pump you could probably shave a minute or two off that time with practice.
The pressure gauge on the hand pump makes it easy to watch your progress so you know when you’ve reached the desired air pressure of 12-15 PSI.

Pumping does provide a decent workout but it’s not too overwhelming. If you’d rather save your energy for the water an electric pump is a great option and Retrospec has a good one that can be added to the package. Learn more about their Breeze ISUP pump here.
Once the board is inflated, secure the clip-in fins, attach the seat to the side clips if using and secure the paddle pieces together. The whole process can be done in 10-15 minutes.
👉Translation: Once you know what you’re doing getting an inflatable SUP rolled out, pumped up and on the water is no big deal… especially if you use an electric pump.
Portability Benefits
Inflatable stand-up paddle boards have come a long way over the past 20 years. Early models were fairly heavy, but advances in ISUP technology have made today’s boards significantly lighter and easier to handle.
One of the biggest benefits of the Weekender Plus is its lightweight construction, which makes it incredibly easy to carry, transport, and manage on and off the water. Weighing only 23 lbs this board can go anywhere.
There are three handles on the Weekender Plus including one main padded handle at the centre of the board as well as a handle at both the nose and tail.
When deflated it rolls up nicely into the included backpack and can easily fit in the trunk of any vehicle. No roof racks are required and no large storage area or heaving lifting is needed.
👉Translation: Overall, the lightweight inflatable design of the Weekender Plus delivers impressive portability and convenience, making it a great choice for paddlers who want a hassle-free way to get on the water.
Comfort Features
If there’s one main thing you can say about the Weekender Plus Hybrid paddle board it’s that it’s a very comfortable ride.
1. WIDTH

The 33″ width provides a very stable and comfortable platform that feels solid underfoot when paddling. It’s equally as stable when kneeling or just hanging out on the board.
2. LINED FOAM DECK PAD

The lined textured EVA foam deck pad provides good grip yet feels soft enough on the feet and knees when standing or kneeling for long periods.
A good deck pad can do wonders for eliminating foot exhaustion and discomfort while paddling.
3. AERCOMFORT KAYAK SEAT
The inflatable kayak seat offers the ultimate in sitting comfort when paddling this board kayak-style.
The kayak seat is one of the best I’ve tried. The bottom seat is inflatable and surprisingly comfortable.

The back comes up quite high and provides excellent support. The straps can be tightened depending on how rigid you want the back to be.
The straps easily clip on to the seat attachment loops on the sides of the deck pad.

There is also a small very handy zippered pouch on the back of the seat that can be used for carrying snacks or a small dry bag with your phone.

4. SHOULDER STRAP
There are also a couple of EasyLink PVC loops on the side of the deck pad for securing the shoulder strap.

The shoulder strap makes it easy to carry the board hands free and reduces strain when transporting the board to and from the water.
5. REMOVABLE FOOT REST
The included foot rest allows for better posture and reduced fatigue while using the kayak seat by providing a solid surface to push your feet against.
This allows for better posture and greatly increases paddling efficiency when paddling kayak-style.

The footrest is basic but functional and it works great. Simply secure the footrest rod into the fabric loops at the front of the deck pad so that it is comfortable with your height. Use the footrest when paddling the Weekender Plus seated.
6. THREE HANDLES

Also not to be overlooked the padded centre handle allows for a comfortable grip when carrying the board without the shoulder strap.
There is also a grab handle at both the nose and tail of the board that can be used for grabbing the board if you are in the water. The nose and tail handles can also be used if carrying the board with two people.
👉 Whether on the water for only an hour or most of the day comfort will not be an issue with this board. In just about every area the Weekender Plus gets a 5 star comfort rating.
Action Mount

At the nose of the board is an integrated action mount with M6 threading, making it easy to attach an action camera and capture your time on the water.
It’s a feature we don’t typically expect to see at this price point, as action mounts are usually reserved for more premium paddle boards.
It’s another thoughtful addition that reinforces the excellent value Retrospec delivers with the Weekender Plus Hybrid.
On-Water Performance
Stability

Stability is where the Weekender Plus truly shines.
As someone who is constantly introducing friends and family to paddle boarding, I appreciate equipment that inspires confidence.
The wide platform makes balancing much easier than many narrower boards and beginners will be able to stand comfortably within a relatively short period of time.
This is not a board that feels overly tippy or unstable even in light choppy water, whether standing or sitting.
The added stability is also a big plus for larger riders who may feel uncomfortable on leaner boards.
Even though it’s not that long at only 10’6″, it has a wide enough centre platform to feel solid on the water even when loaded with extra weight.
The good stability rating makes it an ideal choice for bringing along a dog or child for the ride as well.
Tip: The board will feel the most stable with all three fins attached.
👉Translation: This is a great option for beginner paddlers, larger riders and for those who want more stability and comfort while paddling either solo or with a passenger on board.
If you plan to paddle mostly in kayak mode and feel that you may need even more stability it might be worth using an inflatable kayak as opposed to an inflatable SUP. Check out our Retrospec Coaster inflatable kayak review, which is another fantastic budget friendly option for getting on the water.
Performance for Beginners

This is one of the most beginner-friendly paddle boards I’ve used and I’ll tell you why.
The Weekender Plus provides an excellent balance of stability and ease of use. When a board gets too big it can be hard to handle on and off the water.
If a board is quite lean it can take lots of practice to balance well and get comfortable.
However what this board does well is it balances a relatively shorter length making it easy to paddle and maneuver with an ideal beginner width for stability.
It’s not a fast board but it also doesn’t drag and takes minimal effort to turn.
If you’re a first-time paddler unsure of your balance yet, the Weekender Plus will help build your confidence quickly.
With the all-around shape and the tri-fin system the board tracks reasonably well and provides a fairly predictable ride. For someone learning the basics of paddle boarding, that predictability makes a huge difference.
Performance for Intermediate Riders
Although clearly designed with beginners in mind, intermediate paddlers will still find plenty to like.
The board glides efficiently across calm water and maintains a decent pace for the size and shape.

It isn’t designed for speed, but it does move smoothly and responds fairly well.
We particularly enjoyed it with the seat paddling kayak-style as it was a very relaxing and enjoyable ride.

👉Translation: Overall, the Weekender Plus strikes an excellent balance of stability, maneuverability, and predictable performance, making it an ideal choice for beginners. Yet it still offers enough versatility and enjoyable paddling characteristics to satisfy recreational and intermediate paddlers.
Tracking and Maneuverability
Straight-Line Tracking
We had no issues with the tracking. The three fins do a good job at helping the board maintain direction and there was very little side-side movement.
Occasional corrective strokes will be needed in wind but overall tracking performance was better than expected.
The three fins take only seconds to easily clip in to the fin boxes. They can be removed when deflating the board and packing it away.

Without the fins attached the board does not track as well and it takes more effort to keep moving in a straight line.
Therefore unless paddling in very shallow water we suggest using all three fins for the best performance.
Turning Performance
A wider board typically takes more effort to turn however the shorter length of the Weekender Plus helps to minimize the effort needed.
This is a board that prioritizes stability so step-back turns and aggressive maneuvers are possible but it’s not the main focus or where it shines.
Expect to put a little effort into the turns but it’s nothing to be concerned about as overall this board is still very easy to paddle and maneuver for recreational paddling.
👉Translation: The Weekender Plus sacrifices a bit of responsiveness in exchange for excellent stability and comfort—a compromise that works well for its intended users.
Cargo Storage Area

There are two bungee storage systems. The 6-point bungee storage at the nose of the board is the largest and is very useful for storing dry bags, water bottles, sandals or even a small cooler.

The 4-point bungee storage at the tail of the board is a little smaller but still works great for storing a dry bag or other gear.
Two storage systems are ideal on a paddle board and perfect for keeping your gear and accessories secure while on the water. This adds versatility for longer day trips when more gear is needed to bring on the ride.
Durability: How Tough Is It?
Resistance To Wear And Tear
When looked after properly you can expect the Weekender Plus to hold up well with regular use.
It’s not considered a premium board but the material is durable and the construction is strong. It can handle launching from rocky shorelines and beaches and it’s not problem to bump into a log or some debris in the water.
It is good practice with any inflatable SUP to avoid dragging over sharp rocks or objects and to carry the board rather than drag it to and from the water.
Other tips to prolong the life of your inflatable paddle board are:
- Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after paddling in salty ocean water
- Dry off completely after use
- When off the water keep the board in the shade if possible as air can expand in the heat putting pressure on the seams.
- If it’s not possible to keep the board in the shade then let out a little air so there is room for air expansion in the heat.
- Roll loosely rather than folding when storing deflated
- Remove the fins before storage to avoid bending the fin boxes
- Store out of direct sunlight and away from the elements
👉Translation: Based on its construction and materials, the Weekender Plus is built to handle regular use and years of recreational paddling with proper care and maintenance.
Paddle Quality & Paddle Holder
3-Piece SUP Paddle + Kayak Blade Attachment

The package comes with a 3-piece SUP paddle as well as a kayak blade attachment.
The paddles have an aluminum shaft and the blades are constructed from a blend of Polypropylene (PP) plastic and fiberglass fibers.
This type of construction tends to be extremely durable and long lasting. It is a very resilient paddle that can handle a fair amount of use and abuse. The paddle also floats so if it is accidentally dropped in the water it will be easy to grab.
While serious enthusiasts may eventually upgrade to a lighter carbon fiber paddle, most users will be perfectly satisfied with the one included.
Paddle Specs:
- Adjustable height range: 63″-84″
- Weighs 1.87 lbs.
- Collapses to 32″ in size and stores nicely in the included backpack
Side Paddle Holder

On the right side of the board is two velcro strips that can be used to secure the paddle when not in use. This is extremely handy when carrying the board or when doing SUP yoga or even fishing.
The paddle holder keeps the paddle safe and out of the way when not using it.
Backpack and Storage
Convenient Transportation

The included durable nylon shell backpack zips open on 3 sides making it easy to get the board in and out of the bag.
It accommodates the entire kit comfortably and includes adjustable shoulder straps for easy carrying as well as a waist strap and chest clip for added support.
Backpack Dimensions: 42″x18″x9″

The front zippered pocket provides convenient storage for smaller items, while the two padded handles make the backpack comfortable to lift and easy to load into or out of a vehicle.
The bottom of the bag features a convenient vent that allows the board to dry while stored, helping prevent musty odors and mildew.
The backpack does not include wheels for pulling, and the shoulder straps could use a little more padding.
That said, considering the affordable price of the package, it’s a well-designed rugged backpack that adds to the overall convenience of transporting an inflatable SUP.
Best Uses for the Weekender Plus
1. Recreational Paddling
The Weekender Plus truly shines as a recreational paddle board, whether you’re standing or using it in kayak mode.

From exploring local lakes and cruising calm bays to floating down slow-moving rivers, it delivers a comfortable, stable, and versatile ride that makes every outing enjoyable.
2. Fitness Workouts
The wider width and stable platform make it ideal for fitness-oriented SUP activities such as:.
- Core workouts
- Balance training
- SUP yoga practice
The stability helps maintain confidence during movement-based exercises.
3. Family Use
Families will appreciate how forgiving and versatile this board is. It can be loaded up with extra gear, kids, dogs or even possibly an extra adult passenger without feeling overly unstable.
It’s even an ideal SUP to use for guests trying paddle boarding for the first time.
The fact that it comes with a kayak seat and kayak blade attachment means those not comfortable with standing can start off seated if they prefer.
Areas for Improvement
All paddle boards have pros and cons but it’s not easy to pick out too many areas of improvement with this one.
The material could be upgraded to woven drop stitch for a stronger more rigid shape but that would increase the price of the package.
Considering the price, you’re getting a great product. If we were to nitpick the only main area that stands out as a slight limitation is speed.
Speed Limitations
As we have already covered the Weekender Plus prioritizes stability over outright speed.
Therefore, paddlers seeking maximum glide efficiency or a board that supports a faster paddling cadence may be better suited to a narrower touring board such as the Retrospec Weekender Tour. Its longer, more streamlined shape allows it to glide farther with each stroke.
This lack of speed for the Weekender Plus means that it takes more strokes and more effort to cover longer distances.
For recreational users, however, we believe this is unlikely to be a significant drawback and the pros of the Weekender Plus far outweigh the cons.
Value for Money
One of the Strongest Selling Points
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the Retrospec Weekender Plus is its value. Many paddle boards costing substantially more offer only marginal improvements.
The entire package is competitively priced, and its combination of:
- Solid construction
- Excellent stability
- Beginner-friendly performance
- Useful accessories
- Attractive styling
- Reliable durability
… makes it one of the best values in its class.
Final Verdict

Would We Recommend the Retrospec Weekender Plus?
Absolutely, there’s no question.
The Retrospec Weekender Plus strikes an excellent balance between affordability, quality, portability, and stable performance.
It may not be the fastest board available, and advanced paddlers seeking better glide might eventually want a more premium board that is a little more technical.
However, for the vast majority of recreational users, this board delivers exactly what matters most.
The stability, durability, and ease of use really shines through. Whether paddling it as a SUP or using the seat and paddling kayak-style, it’s a very comfortable ride.
The versatility will appeal to a wide range of users making the whole package very functional.
In our experience the Weekender Plus consistently provides a fun and reliable experience on the water. What more can you ask for!
